Nearly one half of Syria’s 23 million people have been displaced in its civil war and no group has been as severely affected as children. Children make up more than half of the three million refugees living in camps or makeshift housing and some news reports indicate that children are actually being specifically targeted in the violence.
Originally commissioned by the World Economic Forum and created at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, this immersive journalism piece focuses on the plight of these children. By coupling pioneering virtual reality technologies with audio and video captured at a tragic event, Project Syria transports audiences to the a scene as the story unfolds.

When thirty-five year old Anastasio Hernandez Rojas was beaten and tasered to death by the border patrol, an incident that the San Diego coroner’s office ruled was a homicide, he was one of more than a dozen migrants who have been killed by the border patrol under questionable circumstances in the past two years. Those deaths have recently led the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector to initiate a review into the border patrols’ “Use of Force protocols.”
This immersive documentary plans to highlight and create awareness of the dehumanization of migrants on our borders using a revolutionary immersive nonfiction story that employs gaming and virtual reality technologies to tell the narrative. By putting the audience on scene the harrowing night of Hernandez Rojas death, Use of Force Protocol will provide a deeper understanding of what’s happening on our borders.

Produced exclusively from real recordings of 911 calls, witness trial testimony and architectural drawings that provide the exact layout of both interiors and exteriors of the condo complex, One Dark Night tells the story of the day teenager Travyon Martin was shot and killed by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.
By anchoring the piece in accurate and unassailable elements, the user becomes transported inside a reliable, albeit virtual, version of the story as an eyewitness. One Dark Night breaks new ground on multiple levels, including through audio carefully cleaned by forensic specialists Sourcesound and Primeau Productions, with the latter asserting that the reconstructed audio indicates George Zimmerman cocked his gun just before he gave chase.

Hunger in Los Angeles is an immersive journalistic experience set in the heart of the city, where the indigent are trying to survive on an over-strained food distribution system. By embedding audio that was captured from the First Unitarian Church in an immersive 3D Unity scene, we become witness to a distressing event that unfolds.

Kiya is a virtual reality piece telling the story of two sisters' valiant, but ultimately unsuccessful, efforts to try to rescue their third sister, Kiya, from her ex-boyfriend. Using two separate recorded calls to emergency workers, the experience puts the viewer on scene as the tragic events unfold. With three women killed every day by their intimate partners in the United States, Kiya is ultimately a call to action: that this should never happen to anyone's sister (or wife, mother, and daughter) ever again.
Kiya was commissioned by Al Jazeera America, and was first revealed at TEDWomen.
